# How to Begin

A practical beginner guide to starting mindfulness with short, repeatable practices and realistic expectations.

Start small. A few minutes of regular practice is often more useful than an ambitious routine that is difficult to sustain.

1. Choose a quiet or reasonably settled place.
2. Sit, stand, or lie down comfortably.
3. Notice one simple anchor such as breathing, body sensation, or sound.
4. When the mind wanders, notice it without criticism and return to the anchor.
5. End by noticing how you feel, without demanding a particular result.

For children, keep practices shorter, more concrete, and more playful.

## A simple way to begin

Start small:

1. Choose one anchor, such as the breath, sounds, or body sensations.
2. Practise for 1 to 3 minutes.
3. Notice when attention wanders.
4. Return without treating distraction as failure.
5. Repeat at roughly the same time for several days.

You do not need special equipment, a silent room, or a long session. Consistency matters more than intensity when you are building the habit.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/start-here/how-to-begin.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
