# Yoga & Pranayama Terms

A plain-language orientation to yoga, pranayama, asana, Yoga Nidra, nadis, and related practice terms.

Yoga terminology often crosses physical, contemplative, philosophical, and traditional contexts.

## Yoga

A broad Indian tradition that includes ethical, physical, respiratory, meditative, and philosophical disciplines.

Modern posture-based yoga represents only one part of that larger history.

## Asana

A physical posture used in yoga practice.

## Pranayama

Traditional breath-regulation practices.

Different pranayama methods can have different physiological effects, so they should not all be described as “calming breathing.”

## Yoga Nidra

A guided practice of deep relaxation and awareness, usually performed lying down.

## Nadi

In traditional yogic physiology, nadis are subtle channels through which prana is described as moving.

They are traditional concepts and should not be presented as anatomical structures established by modern biomedical science.

## Mudra

A symbolic gesture or bodily seal used in yoga, meditation, ritual, and classical Indian traditions.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/glossary-and-key-concepts/yoga-and-pranayama-terms.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
