# Mindfulness for Anxiety in Children

Age-appropriate ways to help children notice worry and return to the present without forcing calm.

When a child is anxious, the goal is not to argue them out of the feeling or force them to become calm immediately.

Mindfulness can help a child notice what is happening in the body and mind while remaining connected to a supportive adult.

## A simple sequence

1. **Connect first.** Use a calm tone and acknowledge the child's experience.
2. **Ground in the senses.** Notice feet, hands, sounds, colours, or objects in the room.
3. **Breathe comfortably.** Avoid exaggerated breathing if it makes the child more self-conscious.
4. **Name the feeling.** “Worry is here” can be easier than “I am anxious.”
5. **Choose one next step.** Keep it small and concrete.

## What not to do

* do not insist that mindfulness must remove the anxiety
* do not force closed eyes
* do not use meditation as punishment
* do not ask a child to stay with overwhelming sensations
* do not replace professional support where it is needed

For younger children, movement, sensory grounding, drawing, storytelling, and co-regulation may work better than formal meditation.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/children-and-parents/mindfulness-for-anxiety-in-children.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
