# Big Feelings & Emotional Regulation

Mindfulness guidance for helping children notice big feelings, regulate safely, and choose a helpful next response.

Mindfulness can help children create a small space between a strong emotion and an automatic reaction.

A simple sequence is:

1. **Notice** what is happening.
2. **Name** the feeling in simple language.
3. **Locate** where it is felt in the body.
4. **Breathe or ground** without trying to force the feeling away.
5. **Choose** the next helpful action.

Adults should avoid using mindfulness as a way to silence distress. Listening, reassurance, boundaries, and appropriate professional support may still be needed.

## When to use this approach

Use this sequence when a child is able to hear, respond, and engage with a simple prompt.

If the child is at peak distress, begin with **connection and co-regulation** rather than asking them to meditate. A calm adult presence, physical safety, reduced stimulation, and simple reassurance may be more useful first.

Mindfulness becomes helpful when it supports the child in understanding an emotion, not when it is used to make the emotion disappear quickly.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/children-and-parents/big-feelings-and-emotional-regulation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
