# The “I Am” Inquiry

A direct contemplative inquiry into the simple sense of being before added labels and stories.

Before adding descriptions such as profession, age, success, failure, personality, history, or belief, there is a simple sense:

**I am.**

The “I Am” inquiry explores that immediate sense of being.

## A short practice

Sit quietly.

Notice the sentence:

**“I am.”**

For a moment, do not complete it.

Not:

* I am this role.
* I am this emotion.
* I am this history.
* I am this thought.

Simply notice the felt fact of being present.

Then ask gently:

**What is this sense of being before I describe it?**

Do not strain for an unusual experience.

## Why this matters

Much psychological suffering becomes intensified when a temporary experience is fused with identity:

“I feel afraid” becomes “I am a fearful person.”

“I failed” becomes “I am a failure.”

The inquiry does not deny the experience. It questions the additional identity conclusion.

This theme sits at the heart of The Holistic Care's deeper self-inquiry work.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/awareness-and-self-inquiry/the-i-am-inquiry.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
