# Self-Compassion

A grounded approach to meeting difficulty without harsh self-criticism or avoidance.

Self-compassion means responding to your own difficulty with the same basic humanity you might offer someone you care about.

It is not self-pity, denial, or giving yourself permission to avoid responsibility.

## Three useful movements

**Recognise:** “This is difficult.”

**Humanise:** “Difficulty, uncertainty, and imperfection are part of being human.”

**Respond:** “What would be supportive and responsible now?”

Self-compassion can coexist with accountability. You can acknowledge a mistake clearly without turning the mistake into a permanent identity.

## A short practice

Place attention on the body and breathe naturally.

Notice the tone of your inner language.

If it is harsh, experiment with a more accurate and constructive sentence.

Instead of:

> “I always ruin everything.”

try:

> “I am disappointed by what happened. What can I learn and repair?”

The goal is not artificial positivity. It is reducing unnecessary self-attack so that clearer action becomes possible.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/adults-and-everyday-wellbeing/self-compassion.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
