# Emotional Awareness

How to notice emotions clearly without suppressing them or being completely driven by them.

Emotional awareness begins by recognising that an emotion is an experience happening now, not a complete definition of who we are.

Instead of:

**“I am angry.”**

we can sometimes notice:

**“Anger is present.”**

This small shift can create space for choice.

## A practical sequence

1. **Pause.**
2. **Name the emotion** as simply as possible.
3. **Locate it in the body.**
4. **Notice the accompanying thoughts.**
5. **Ask what the emotion may be signalling.**
6. **Choose the next response deliberately.**

Mindfulness does not mean accepting harmful behaviour from others, suppressing anger, or remaining passive.

Emotions can carry important information about needs, values, boundaries, loss, fear, or connection. Awareness helps us listen without immediately acting out every impulse.

When emotions feel unmanageable, persistent, or linked with trauma or risk, professional support may be more appropriate than self-guided mindfulness alone.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.theholisticcare.com/knowledge/adults-and-everyday-wellbeing/emotional-awareness.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
